Reasons Why I Should Keep Living Under a Rock

Earlier this year, I wrote an apologetic blog post about my lack of interest in politics, current events, and celebrity gossip – a.k.a. all the topics one resorts to when engaging in small talk with strangers. As 2022 nears its end, I thought it would be fun to contradict most of what I said back in March. Not the part about being socially awkward, which I still 100% stand by. But having to continually apologize for my quirks? Here’s a habit I’m ready to kick.

My Instagram Feed Says I’m Weak

Summer is my favorite time of year. Bare feet, barely-there clothes, lazy mornings. While most moms prepare for summer by finding the perfect camp for their kids, I get ready to bunker in for a ten-week session of Camp Mami. Collaborative breakfasts, long sessions of Marco Polo, never-ending rounds of Monopoly: these are my everyday summertime thrills. Of course, things never turn out according to plan. No matter how great the intention, there can only be one outcome when a mom and her three kids spend extended periods of time under one roof: chaos.

Things That Happen When You Turn Forty

I wake up on the day I turn forty without a plan. No scheduled activities. No pre-ordered birthday cake. No candles to blow out. Quite intentionally, today is a blank slate. Depending on what kind of person you are, this may or may not sound surprising. But if you’re a control freak like me, and have spent your whole life planning everything down to the last minute, being okay with not having a plan -- on your birthday? -- this is downright frightening. I wake up on the day I turn forty to wrinkled cotton sheets and the sound of my children making breakfast in the kitchen. Cling, clatter, clang. Breakfast in bed is a sacred birthday ritual for the five of us; if you’re not spilling powdered sugar on your bedsheets, then it doesn’t even count as a birthday.
